Andrew Mercer
At Preszler Injury Lawyers, Andrew Mercer leads the firm’s property damage practice, with a focus on helping policyholders through complex insurance coverage disputes. His practice is devoted exclusively to this area of law.
Andrew represents individuals and businesses whose property insurance claims have been denied, reduced, or otherwise mishandled. He has experience assisting clients after a wide range of losses, including those involving fire, flood, severe weather, and other major damage events. He also brings broad insurance law experience to his work, with knowledge spanning automobile policies, commercial general liability, errors and omissions insurance, directors and officers coverage, crime and dishonesty insurance, title insurance, and other commercial coverages.
A defining part of Andrew’s background is his prior experience representing insurers. That perspective allows him to approach disputes with a strong understanding of how insurers assess claims and build their defence strategies. He now applies that insight exclusively on behalf of policyholders, helping clients pursue the coverage they are entitled to and rebuild after significant losses.
Andrew has represented clients before all levels of court in Ontario and in commercial arbitrations. He also has substantial experience with the insurance appraisal process, having served as an appraiser, an umpire, and counsel on judicial reviews arising from appraisal decisions. He is known for giving clients practical, straightforward guidance on legal issues that can otherwise feel highly technical and overwhelming.
His work is also informed by a strong academic foundation. Andrew is the co-author of Introduction to Canadian Insurance Law, Auto Insurance Coverage Law in Ontario, and the “Security for Costs” chapter in Civil Practice and Procedure in Ontario. In addition, he has published academic writing on insurance law and has taught Civil Procedure as an adjunct professor at Western University.
Outside of his legal practice, Andrew enjoys spending time with his two young children and playing guitar whenever he can.
