Section B benefits are included in all standard automobile insurance policies. Since all drivers in the province are required to be insured, any motorist who has been injured in a car accident may be entitled to Section B benefits.

Section B benefits can provide injured motor vehicle collision survivors with a maximum of $50,000 for up to four years after their accident. These benefits are designed to offset the costs of necessary, injury-related expenses, which might include:

  • Medical expenses
  • Ambulance bills
  • Medical equipment
  • Prescriptions
  • Mobility aids
  • Physiotherapy
  • Chiropractic sessions
  • Massage therapy
  • Strength-training exercise programs
  • Psychological counselling
  • Home modifications to accommodate acquired disabilities
  • Mileage expenses for trips to and from medical appointments
  • And possibly more

Additionally, if the injuries sustained by a car crash survivor prevent them from returning to work, they may be able to access weekly indemnity benefits. These income replacement payments can provide up to $250 per week to injured car accident survivors for a maximum of two years following their accident if their injuries make it impossible for them to complete the tasks of their job.

Accident survivors who were their household’s primary caretaker and can no longer perform housework because of the injuries they sustained in a collision may be entitled to additional accident benefits. Injured insurance policyholders may be able to access $100 per week for up to 52 weeks so that they can retain the services of a housekeeper.

Furthermore, if a motor vehicle collision ended in a fatality, families of the deceased may receive $2,500 for funeral expenses, $25,000 in death benefits for the head of household or their spouse, and $5,000 in death benefits for dependents.

Also known as “no-fault accident benefits,” Section B benefits could be available to injured car crash survivors regardless of their level of culpability for the collision. That means, even if your own errors on the road contributed to the circumstances leading to your accident, if you were injured in the crash, you may be able to access Section B benefits.

That said, insurers often find reasons to deny injured drivers’ claims for the Section B benefits to which they should be entitled. If the accident benefits payments you deserved were withheld from you, our Section B benefit lawyers serving Yarmouth may be able to provide you with assistance.
