If you were injured in a car crash, you may be able to collect no-fault accident benefits from your insurance provider. Also referred to as Section B benefits, no-fault accident benefits are included in all standard automobile insurance plans throughout the province. Accident benefits often provide injured survivors of traumatic collisions with compensation for expenses they have incurred as a result of being injured. Since all motorists in the province must carry mandatory insurance, all policyholders who have been injured in a car crash may be entitled to accident benefits coverage, even if their own errors or wrongful actions behind the wheel caused the injurious collision to occur.

Injured accident survivors may be able to claim a maximum of $50,000 in accident benefits for up to four years following their collision. These benefits payments can be used towards the cost of certain expenses incurred by car crash survivors because of the injuries they sustained in a collision. These expenses might include:

  • Medical treatments
  • Rehabilitation costs
  • Physiotherapy
  • Mobility aids, assistive medical equipment
  • Prescriptions
  • Home modifications to accommodate newly acquired disabilities
  • Ambulance services
  • Mileage expenses to and from medical appointments
  • Housekeeping services
  • Psychological counselling
  • And possibly more

Furthermore, accident survivors who were their household’s primary caretaker and can no longer perform housework because of the injuries they sustained in a collision may be entitled to additional accident benefits. In order to retain the services of a housekeeper, injured insurance policyholders may be able to access $100 per week for up to 52 weeks.

If the injuries sustained by a car crash survivor makes it impossible for them to continue performing the duties of their job, they may be able to access income replacement payments in the form of weekly indemnity benefits. Injured collision survivors who can no longer work may be able to receive up to $250 per week for a maximum of two years following their accident.

Additionally, in the truly unfortunate cases where collisions end in fatalities, families of the deceased may receive $2,500 for funeral expenses, $25,000 in death benefits for the head of household or their spouse, and $5,000 in death benefits for dependents.

While accident benefits are designed to provide important financial relief to injured collision survivors undergoing extraordinarily challenging circumstances, in many cases, insurers find reasons to deny their policyholders’ claims for benefits.
