Car accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. In a flash, a person’s entire life could be changed forever. When serious collisions happen, the occupants of any vehicle involved could sustain severe, even catastrophic injuries. And in order to pay necessary injury-related costs, car crash survivors could suffer substantial financial losses.

However, throughout the province, all motor vehicle operators must hold mandatory automobile insurance. All standard automobile insurance plans include provisions for Section B Benefits.

Section B benefits may be made available to injured survivors of motor vehicle collisions to help offset the costs of certain expenses arising from their injuries. Also referred to as “no-fault accident benefits,” Section B benefits may be available to any injured insurance policyholder, regardless of their degree of culpability for the accident. That means that, even if a person’s errors or wrongful actions on the road were responsible for causing the collision in which they sustained injuries, they still may be able to recover compensation through Section B benefits to pay for essential, injury-related costs.

For up to four years following their collision, injured car accident survivors may be able to claim a maximum of $50,000 in Section B benefits. These payments may be available to help afford the costs of several injury-related expenses, including:

  • Medical expenses
  • Ambulance bills
  • Medical equipment
  • Prescriptions
  • Mobility aids
  • Physiotherapy
  • Chiropractic sessions
  • Massage therapy
  • Strength-training exercise programs
  • Psychological counselling
  • Home modifications to accommodate acquired disabilities
  • Mileage expenses for trips to and from medical appointments
  • And possibly more

Furthermore, depending on the circumstances of the collision and its effects on an injured survivor’s life, insurance policies could provide additional coverage, including:

  • Weekly Indemnity Benefits: Income replacement payments of up to $250/week for 2 years issued to accident survivors who cannot work because of their injuries.
  • Housekeeping expenses: $100 per week for 52 weeks to retain the services of a housekeeper if the injured accident victim cannot maintain their residence as a result of their injuries.
  • Death Benefits: For accidents ending in fatalities, $2,500 in funeral expenses, $25,000 in death benefits for the head of household or their spouse, and $5,000 in death benefits for dependents.

In the aftermath of an injury-causing accident, injured survivors may struggle under the weight of their newly acquired financial obligations. Section B benefits provide much-needed coverage to insurance policyholders facing very difficult circumstances.

Sadly, many injured accident survivors receive denied claims for Section B benefits. They may face undue scrutiny and disbelief from their insurance provider, who can, for a number of reasons, withhold the benefits payments to which they may be entitled.
